Analyst: PS3 production on track
by Zhao Jingyu
next-gen.biz reports that Sony has reaffirmed its commitment to shipping 6 million PlayStation 3s by the end of March next year. Ever since the Japanese giant announced that it planned to ship 6 million units by the end of the fiscal year, analysts and gamers alike have been making predictions on whether the ambitious target would be met.
Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian feels that Sony is on track to meeting its target, saying that “While meaningful execution risk remains in the months ahead of the launch, we believe that guidance suggests that development is still on track, despite the inherent complexities of the platform. Sony indicated it plans to manufacture the PS3 in its own Japanese plants as well as through outsourcing partners in China”. This is the first time that Sony will be producing launch units outside Japan. Previously, the company would produce initial units in Japan before starting production elsewhere, when costs dropped.
Sebastian believes that Sony will need to start production by either July or August, as it is a very complex process. “While Sony has certain manufacturing advantages, at the end of the day, this is a very complex process, and they’re going to be limited to the yields that they can come up with”, he said.
The PlayStation 3 is set to launch this November, a year after it's main competitor, the Xbox 360 hit shelves; it has been speculated that Sony's worldwide launch and launch number of 2 million units will enable the company to make up for lost time.
Sony has promised to ship 2 million units by launch and 1 million units per month thereafter.
